This is a picture of my grandfather & his brother Judah taken in 1939. Both served in WWII. Judah died in basic training. The year this was taken, 10% of Americans thot these two should be deported because they were Jewish. Only 39% thot they should be treated like any American.
My grandfather passed when I was in my 40s. This is not ancient history. The illiberalism woven deep into the fabric of US political culture is something far too many of us have overlooked. Recognizing it takes us some way toward understanding where Trump & his base come from.
It's important to note that the hatred aimed at my grandfather and great-uncle pales in comparison to that faced by African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans.
That Roper poll from 1939 was taken AFTER news of Kristallnacht had reached the states. 10% said Jews should be deported. 53% said they should face "some restrictions." Only 39% said they should be treated the same as any American.
That picture was taken in Ebensburg, Pa where my great-grandfather had run a small clothing store since 1923. In 1924, 15 years before the picture was taken, approximately 40% of the adult men in that town had purchased KKK robes. https://twitter.com/SethCotlar/status/1231691043856236544?s=20
