Living in the New York/New Jersey area is so Dickensian these days. It is the best of times/worst of times.
In some ways we are fully locked down. In others, we are emerging into a new normal - different but welcome.
I feel a bit of survivor’s guilt talking about it here...

...as much of the rest of the country backslides or closes back down.
Around me - an area where there is total mask compliance - there are now opportunities to regain some semblance of normalcy.
Distanced tables on summer patios. Haircuts. Beaches at half capacity.

My son and I are starting to find some scattered fragments of happy living among the dropped pottery of life in corona-times.
All of the country should be in this place. It is shameful that we’re not.

I pause before saying any of this because it feels uncomfortable to be celebrating happiness from opportunities not available to people in other parts of the country.
But New York and New Jersey were hit by an atomic bomb while the rest of the country went on.

NY and NJ should merely be rejoining the rest of the country right now.
Instead we’ve switched places.
It didn’t have to be this way.
May we never forget who is responsible for us being here - and at our earliest opportunity, may we vote them out.
