that Berejiklian line about wearing a mask “if you feel unsafe” is a very specific ideology. It tells us that the feelings of individuals determine - and are responsible for - public health policy, which is a lie and abrogation of her responsibility as a political leader.
one of the central strategies of neoliberals is to repackage their actions, which cause actual harm, as “risk” and then transfer that “risk” - actual harm, up to and including death - away from themselves and onto those with fewer resources to escape the “risk”/actual harm.
in the same way, actual harm caused by neoliberal policies are framed as “risk” to the “vulnerable” rather than the known cause of actual harm to people already struggling - with poverty, wage theft, unemployment, racism, misogyny etc - who are targeted by cruel, punitive policy.
headline after headline paint this picture. “Raise the rate or risk people falling into poverty, experts warn”. Yeah no that would be nasty hateful governments like the one headed by Morrison *deliberately* driving people into poverty.
