Here’s what a physician family member working at a hospital in Southern California sent me:
This doctor is not a crisis actor, the children who sobbed at the loss of their father are not fake, and… the drug that starts with H is not a cure.
These patients are not going to be the last and my relative, the doc knows it. He tells me their ICU is full and patients are spilling into areas not meant for ICU care.
This is STILL happening, in America. Increased positive tests, increased hospitalizations, increased deaths. What has to happen to make this real?
As if the videos from Italy were not enough, months ago, we New Yorkers showed the rest of the country what was coming, we shared our pain, gave fair warning.
However, like toddlers who can only learn by experience, parts of the nation never believed it to be real, as if a virus cares whether you’re in a red/blue state.
As we approach / pass another arbitrary milestone of deaths due to Covid-19 it is getting increasingly difficult to not be incensed by our idiocracy.
I say marking an arbitrary number of Covid deaths because if you’re the 149,999th or the 150,001st someone who loves you will suffer just the same.
Sadly, we aren’t finished.
If all covid deaths stopped & and the @newshour kept this steady pace of 5 people once a week, it would only take us 576 YEARS to profile everyone lost.
We’re losing track of these individuals.
Lost are all their potential contributions as moms, dads, sisters, brothers, teachers, doctors, inventors, and as our friends.
Covid-19 certainly has exposed class structures where our essential workers and our expendable workers overlap. One of many topics we don’t like confronting.
Blaming “others” is often a sign you can’t face yourself. In 2020 in America, we’re blaming Asian Americans like its 1942.
Instead we look for solutions from people who preach about alien impregnation, vs experts in science… because… why again?
Our distrust and attacks on institutions … are limited only by 240 characters.
Launched often by the powerful who are suddenly powerless to deep state conspiracies.
Week 1 of 8 of being in Florida, fellow shopper (unmasked) at the Publix looks at me (wearing a mask) and yells about mask wearing Democrats. (When I became a citizen, I opted for neither party partly because of such stupidity)
To be American, to want no more easily preventable loss of life should not be partisan.
But now it is.
Do toe tags have a space for party ID?
We have enough viral examples on social media of people who confuse their freedom to breathe freely with their right to end my freedom to keep breathing.
Our insistence on personal freedoms over everything will lead to our collective oppression.
If stocks & wealth are your prime drivers- which economies do you think are going to recover from this faster? us or ... everyone else?
Will it be all fixed with an election result in Nov.?
Not even close.
Took us decades to get here, and it ain’t gonna be fixed quickly.
Wanna be like Italy and Spain and Korea where kids are able to go school and people are back in the office, wear a mask.
Wanna get America back to work, wanna reopen the economy, wear a mask.
Listen to public health experts. They're just asking for help to get the numbers down enough to have a fighting chance …to have enough test kits for the sick, & the icu beds for the worse off.
Wanna “Make America Great Again”? Act like the previous generations who sacrificed for their fellow American.
These grandparents and great grandparents survived wars & depressions partly because they didn’t confuse their rights with their responsibilities. They lived through rationing & planted victory gardens.
We have to want to be better.
And then we have to WORK at it.
Together.
