We're taught that the function of the state is to define the boundaries of what we’re allowed to do. So of course it’s appealing to imagine that the state might recognize genders beyond “M” and “F,” because that’s the permission and affirmation we’ve spent our lives being denied.
But the state doesn’t sort people by gender to make them feel validated. All divisions that the state draws between people are for the benefit of the state, and every single one of those divisions cuts through the bodies of some members of our family.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting your gender to be seen and understood, but the state is not the avenue for this. Your community sees you. Your trans and non-binary family sees you. I see you.
You do not need permission from the state to be who you are, and to seek that permission is to fundamentally misconstrue what it’s trying to accomplish when it tries to sort people by gender.
We don’t need a men’s prison, a women’s prison, and an X-gender prison. We need to knock down the prisons. The ways in which the state regulates gender don’t need to be broadened to include us. They need to be destroyed.
