Church/Preacher history.

Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones (1899-1981).

Some information regarding one of the most influential preachers from the past century, whose writings helped me overcome depression.

Here's why as a believer, you should probably look into Dr Martyn Lloyd Jones.
Martyn Lloyd Jones was a man who had practiced medicine, but sensed a call to preach and went after it.

He became the main pastor of Westminster Chapel in London and preached to thousands of people regularly during his tenure.
He was known for his powerful preaching of the unadulterated Word of God with power, just like Charles Spurgeon.

When J.I. Packer was 22, he went to see him preach.

He later said that he had never heard such preaching in his life and that it came to him like an electric shock.
He was uncompromising, maybe to a fault (more on that another time).

He is known for dealing with many topics in an efficient and phenomenal manner, but two stand out for me, of which I'll speak on in this thread.

1) Depression
2) The power of God.
On depression, he wrote the most classic Christian book on the subject.

In it, he goes through about 21 reasons why Christians deal with depression and how to practically deal with it.

This is one of the few books respected by pastors from basically every branch of Christianity
He had a background in medicine. That alongside his excellent approach to the scriptures and passion for practicality, brought about a book now referenced by pastors ranging from Steve Furtick to John MacArthur.

Honestly? This is the BEST Christian book I've EVER read.
On the power of God.

There have been debates concerning what he believed. Continuationists and cessationists both seem to vie to justify him being on 'their side'.

He was one of the few Calvinists who believed in the 'Baptism of the Spirit'. An experience post conversion.
He however had criticism for both charismatics and cessationists.

The same ones I have.

He believed cessationists were quenching the Spirit. However he believed pentecostals and Charismatics exceeded scriptures with certain doctrines.
He wouldn't be defined as pentecostal.

He didn't believe in tongues being the sign of the baptism, being able to speak in tongues whenever, etc.

However he was passionate to make clear that he believed that the Bible speaks for a baptism of the Spirit which empowers believers.
