This is my theory on the Mystery Seeds. 🌱⁉️

I figured out the origin of my seeds! I'll explain why I believe they are not a "brushing" scam and why these seeds started appearing in the US around the same time.

(A thread).
FIRST. Let's go back to March. What was happening? A TON of people started ordering groceries on the internet. Perhaps for the first time. It was the food hoarding craze! Many things were sold out. Remember the lines at Costco?
So you decide to shop online. Let's say you go on Amazon and enter "lettuce". Or you enter "cherry tomatoes".

Slim pickings! And you're new to this. You land on these products. You see a 🍅📷 and think you're buying tomatoes.

Easy miss the word <seed>.
But would you notice that your "cherry tomatoes" don't arrive? Not really. It's hard to tell that one thing is missing from your pile of groceries. Or maybe you noticed, but didn't really dwell on it.

Ok, so why does your package say "earrings"? And why is it arriving in July?
We'll jump to the anecdote on how I got my seeds.

In December 2019, @vgr started a meme where you'd tweet "1 like = 1 opinion" about a topic.

Instead, I tweeted "1 like = 1 onion" and made a thread of onions. This led to the discovery of Onion Man. https://twitter.com/djbaskin/status/1206398711833583616?s=20
I started researching Onion Man with @AnakanaSchofiel and seeing how I was fascinated by giant onions, @maxhawkins decided to order "giant onion seeds" online and ship them to me as a surprise. 🧅🎁

The seeds never arrived.

Or so it seemed.
In May (5 months later!) I received unmarked seeds in the mail. I had no idea where they came from. Mysterious packaging. No packing slip. Labeled as "stud earring." They look like the seeds the USDA is warning us about.

Except mine were deliberately ordered and sent to me.
SO THIS IS MY THEORY

Everyone getting seeds in July accidentally purchased seeds in March thinking they were buying fresh vegetables.

Since sellers can't ship seeds overseas, it goes through customs labeled as jewelry, and takes months to arrive due to COVID-19 shipping delays.
The seeds ALL appear to look like common US produce purchases like lettuce, tomatoes, onions. 🥬 🍅 (The photo above says spinach.)

It's not a scam. Instead, a confluence of small seed businesses with an uptick in accidental sales from panic shopping.

AMERICANS LOVE SALAD. /end
