We need to discuss "gay" movies for a sec.
Well, gay movies and identity cause I'm annoyed at how freaking devoid ever fucking movie is of community and identity.
Three case studies of the biggest "gay" movies of the last decade:
Moonlight
Call Me By Your Name
Love, Simon
1. Moonlight

This movie is gorgeous. It's beautiful. But like. The first "gay" movie to win best picture since Brokeback (don't get me started on that one), not having a single self-id moment... I don't know. That just seems so. Weird. There is an LGBT community. We exist...
Outside of our romances. We have gay friendships, gay siblinghoods, and all sorts of other relationships. We exist beyond who we have a romantic love for
2. Call Me By Your Name

Sorry, but this shit was pedo. Like.
Why is one of the biggest "gay movies" of recent memory about a 17 year old child and 24 (who looks 30) year old man?

Neither use any kind of identity. They just exist in this mooshy "romance world".
3. Love, Simon

So, this is the only one to have a "I'm gay" moment. But it's also hella femme-phobic. Like. It literally has a "but I'm not *that* gay" scene. Sorry, but this shit was so Cishet digestible, that I can't even begin.
Like. Sorry y'all. It's just fucking frustrating that the only rep we get is the most heteronormative possible side of our lives.
Our lives aren't just made up by our romantic relationships. We have a bunch of other queer contexts, queer experiences.
It's just tiring that all these movies play into the idea that "the gays are lonely". You know? It's a tired trope.
