One day we are going to have to discuss invisibility vs. hypervisibility in regards to Own Voices content and why people get really upset about some portrayals and less upset about others, because it’s not random.
When marginalized groups go through periods of social hypervisibility it’s genuinely dangerous to not have Own Voices content circulating about them.
I try to have ensemble cast diversity in my books but there are some marginalizations you won’t catch me in the streets touching for this exact reason. If the world is looking at a marginalization, there better be GOOD and ACCURATE media content written by that marginalized group
For example, the autistic community is PLAGUED by content written by parents of autistic people and people who aren’t on the spectrum at all and it AGRESSIVELY shifted public opinion about autism during their period of maximum hypervisibility to the point where people lost lives.
Currently transgender and non binary people are going through a period of dangerous hypervisibility and you won’t catch me writing their stories while a trans writer breathes to tell it better. Idc if you think I won’t fuck it up, I might! Not willing to take that chance!
