I’ve been having conversations with friends about the benefits of therapy lately and I wanted to clear some things up about your rights as a client (remember you are a paying client) and how to make sure you’re working with a therapist that is effective for you....(1/8)
1. You can and should look into a therapist’s specialties and intervention strategies. For most people I would recommend working with someone who uses CBT and mindfulness. (2/8)
If you are from a certain background (race/orientation/religion) it is absolutely valid to want a therapist from that same background. (3/8)
Therapy is collaborative. You need to continue the work outside of the session on your own and implement it into your daily life in order to see real growth and improvement. (4/8)
You have to like, respect and trust your therapist. If you don’t, terminate treatment and look for a better fit. (5/8)
Unless you want it to, therapy shouldn’t last forever. The goal is to graduate from treatment equipped with skills to flourish. However, if you feel stuck, you should tell your therapist instead of assuming you’ve gone as far as you can. (6/8)
You can and should collaboratively create a treatment plan with clear objectives as well as a system for checking in about your progress or lack of progress. (7/8)
Therapists are human! And so are you! No one has quick fixes or magical answers. You need to put in the work to see the results! (8/8)
