Obama calling the filibuster a "Jim Crow relic" that might have to go to pass voting rights legislation - gonna be awkward days for Manchin/Sinema if there's a narrow Dem Senate majority in 2021 and they balk.
And before anyone tweets "why didn't Obama do this when he had a supermajority" - Voting Rights Act was intact until the Shelby decision in 2013, when Republicans controlled the House and had no interest in revisiting the law.
That said, Dems absolutely were caught flat-footed on *new* voting rights in 2009. Obama had just won a rout, the "ACORN!" stuff sounded silly (until the video sting), not much planning ahead. Had SCOTUS ruled against VRA in 2009 they likely would have zoomed a new bill through.
