Wow, the replies are so interesting! As a child, my first books by women were "A Wrinkle in Time," by Madeline L'Engle, "A Raisin in the Sun," by Lorraine Hansberry and "The House on Mango Street," by Sandra Cisneros. My first "adult" book was "The Bell Jar," by Sylvia Plath.

Ok, I'm outing myself here as a fantasy nerd when I was a kid—does anyone else remember "The Secret of the Unicorn Queen" by Josepha Sherman? Or "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West" by Mary Stanton?
Zilpha Keatley Snyder and "The Witches of Worm"...anyone?
