As reported by the @nytimes, documents we obtained show Seth Ducharme, who served as a counsel to Attorney General Bill Barr, was closely involved in the investigation of the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/nyregion/seth-ducharme-us-attorney-brooklyn.html
A week before the release of the redacted Mueller report in April 2019, Ducharme emailed DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz regarding a meeting “to explain what John [Durham] and [name redacted] and I are working on.”
The documents we obtained also show Ducharme had multiple meetings with John Durham, the prosecutor appointed by Barr to lead DOJ’s questionable probe of the origins of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. https://www.americanoversight.org/documents-we-obtained-show-barr-met-with-prosecutor-examining-mueller-investigation-immediately-after-mueller-investigation-ended
Earlier this month, Attorney General Bill Barr appointed Ducharme as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. The office has previously pursued investigations related to President Trump’s associates.
In February, Barr designated EDNY to coordinate all of the Justice Department’s Ukraine-related inquiries. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/02/18/justice-department-ukraine-inquiries-115793
Ducharme’s time in the AG’s office and contacts with officials investigating the Russia probe raises concerns about potential undue political influence from Barr, and by extension the president, in his new role.
The politicization of DOJ has been a recurring problem in the Trump administration. You can track our full investigation here. https://www.americanoversight.org/investigation/trump-administrations-politicization-justice-department
