Don’t be sanguine about what some piece of paper says about the election date and the peaceful transfer of power. The same GOP that stole a Supreme Court seat will steal an election, if they think they can get away with it. https://www.salon.com/2020/07/30/trumps-call-to-delay-the-election-is-a-distraction--but-its-also-a-serious-threat/
I'm not trying to be alarmist here, but I fail to understand this widespread confidence that the U.S. is somehow immune to the same politics of coup that have overwhelmed countless other supposed democracies all over the globe.
Literally, Bill Barr came out of retirement because he saw Trump as his best path to installing the authoritarian government unaccountable to democratic checks he's always wanted. He and the openly fascist Chad Wolf control all federal law enforcement.
Meanwhile, anyone who thinks McConnell wouldn't sign off on a tactic to use "delay" in order to steal the White House, well, he literally used delaying tactics to steal a Supreme Court seat.
You can point to the Constitution all you want. McConnell and Barr have long made a sport out of "interpreting" the law in ways that undermine democracy and rule of law. Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.
The law means nothing without power to enforce it. So let us hope (and I do think there's good reason to hope) that Biden and Pelosi are quietly working on a plan to resist what increasingly looks like an inevitable attempted Trump coup.
I really wish liberals would stop pointing at written law as if that settles the question. Trump has committed multiple crimes in office and .....nothing. "The law" is words on paper. We need more.
Not trying to be defeatist. On the contrary, I have faith that if Democrats can get Biden sworn in out of the reach of Trump's federal goons, and the TV networks all broadcast it and treat it as official, Trump might give up. But there's a lot of steps to make sure that happens.
To those who think I and people like me who are taking this seriously are alarmist, I have one question: What previous predictions do you feel didn't hold up? That Trump would commit crimes and get away with them? That he would abuse his pardon power? .....
That he would redirect millions of dollars of federal funds to his private coffers? That he would try to fulfill the desires of Putin to undermine international relations? That he would exploit the powers of federal law enforcement to suppress dissent? ....
That he would abuse his office in a criminal fashion in order to cheat in the 2020 election? Hell, I think even the most alarmist Trump haters didn't expect him to go straight for concentration camps and defending neo-Nazis, but he got right on that.
