If one listened closely to Rev. Lawson's eulogy, the N'ville mov't was not entirely student-led or produced. It was intergenerational. Undoubtedly, Revs. Kelly Miller Smith, Andrew White, & others were equally instrument. Lawson was the bridge btw young and older activists. 1/
The idea that the N'ville movement was produced entirely by students is a myth. Lawson's reference to older Black women in N'ville choosing the downtown area as a target of sit ins has been nearly erased from narratives of the movement when they should be at the center of it. 2/
The Nashville sit-in movement was enveloped in an intergenerational context, while centering the prophetic courage and front-line leadership of students. These two themes (integenerational and youth-led) don't have to be in contradiction to each other. 3/3
