Many Muslims believe that on this day in the year of 632 CE the Prophet Muhammad gave his last sermon near Mount Arafat. Highlights? He told his people to hurt no one, to avoid inflicting any inequity, to uphold the rights of women, and (in not so many words) to not be racist.
Even with questions of textual authenticity, and debates about what "women's rights" actually means, I am happy that this sermon is an important part of my tradition. These messages needed to be heard in 7th century Arabia, and they need to be heard all over the world today.
My summary:
Do your best not to hurt people.
Do your best not to be unjust.
Acknowledge your rights and responsibilities.
Acknowledge others' rights and responsibilities.
Don't fucking be racist.
Repeat: Don't be fucking racist.
"An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab"
"A white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action."
“O People, it is true that you have certain rights over your women, but they also have rights over you."
