1/ Here’s my best guess as to what happened yesterday in #bced.

The Ministry folk read N.S. Education start up and thought, “Hey, this looks pretty good”.

Forgetting that Nova Scotia has zero active cases, no one in the ICU & only had 64 deaths overall.
2/N.S. also shut schools on June 5th— so they had the time to consult widely and plan their September start up.

B.C. is not Nova Scotia.

Admin have been going flat out since December. They are on a well deserved vacation. Schools have not been given any time to plan for Sept.
3/ B.C. still has over 200 active cases and this seems to be increasing daily.

We have one of the lowest testing rates in the world and also don’t test asymptomatic people— COVID-19 is an asymptomatic virus.

BC has also has a high MIS-C rate in children.
4/ My Alternative Plan for September:

1. Time be provided in the 1st week, to get organized & plan. This will allow schools time to survey staff & parents to see what their intentions are about return to school. Timetables can be balanced. Extra staff can be hired if need be.
5/

2. Staff and students who are immune compromised need to be accommodated. Perhaps this can be organized at the district level so that students can still have the maximum amount of choice for courses/electives.
6/

3. Class size should be limited to allow for physical distancing in classes. May be possible depending on how many students elect to stay home. (20?)

4. Masks should be mandated for all staff and students in the halls.
7/

5. Rooms that do not have windows should not be used or HEPA fans should be provided.

6. Schools will need to replace their HVAC filters before being allowed to open. Maximum fresh air should be added to HVAC too.
8/

7. Students & Staff should use a contact tracing app rather than the cohort plan. Students love to go for walks and socialize on the way to the washroom, app will account for that. Cohorts will limit the amount of courses students can take and also limit their future.
9/

8. Additional washing stations should be set up inside and outside of the school.

9. Secondary schools should use the am/pm, quarterly semester system. It minimizes contact in the hallway. Can still use existing timetable with this scenario.
10/

10. All schools should put in touchless water filling stations.

11. Students should eat in their morning class — and plastic dividers should be provided.

These ideas are mostly for Secondary. The contact app is controversial but it would give schools the maximum flexibility it needs to run. Cohorts will greatly limit which courses students will be able to take, especially electives.

I look forward to hearing more ideas.
