I’m actually quite stunned by the number of folks rushing to defend WE. Current controversy aside, their approach to international development and youth engagement has always been off-putting to me - they are definitely not a “great charity”
Here’s a good description of how they work and why it’s a far cry from good practice in development https://www.mcleodgroup.ca/2020/07/wes-international-development-identity-problem/
From that piece: “WE Charity, however, is not a typical organization. It is not accredited with the Standards Program coordinated by Imagine Canada, an umbrella group of Canada’s charities, non-profits and social entrepreneurs.”
“Nor does it adhere to the Canadian Council for International Co-operation’s Code of Ethics and Operational Standards”
Now they say they want to get back to their roots in international development... folks, there are WAY better organizations to support with your donation dollars, that engage in responsible and sustainable development practices
