Coming up at 10:30 EST - looking forward to joining @aliczner @RicSchuster @Joe_Ecology @C_MantykaP and others (please tag) for a virtual symposium on Prioritization in Conservation: Tools and Considerations. #NACCB
Up first - really interesting work from @Joe_Ecology on the use of probability and decision science to help optimize where more monitoring is needed vs when we should take conservation action.
It's a key question with really important practical considerations knowing that many species at risk in Canada have "more monitoring required" as a key activity in recovery strategies - but where it can take years, or some cases decades, for the conservation actions to follow.
Up next @WildPlantsCan speaking on the under-representation of plants in Canada's federal programs for species at risk.
Key question from @wildplantsCan: Reptiles and plants are more likely to be listed under SARA, but how do expenditures compare, including for the Natural Areas Conservation Program (NACP) and Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP)?
Key results from @WildPlantsCan - plants are not represented in federal programs in proportion to their number of listed species. For instance, research shows only 12% of HSP programs focused on plants.
The next presentation in this session is our work @WWFCanada to identify gaps in Canada's terrestrial protected areas network & priority areas that maximize value for species at risk and carbon storage areas - great from @jessieleecurrie @joyce_arabian .
Up next: important learnings from @C_MantykaP about the Tr'ondek Hwech'inland use planning process and how areas of Indigenous use and cultural importance were considered for conservation prioritization.
Now @RicSchuster is speaking about "Democratizing Spatial Planning for Nature and People". Intrigued to hear Richard's thoughts on how to make conservation prioritization exercises more accessible.
You can follow @JDMSnider.
