Been reading a lot about dissociation and emotional numbing, the stuff out extremely smart nervous systems can do automatically to help us survive overwhelming situations.
The problem with numbing is that yes, it can help you survive. But it also creates a situation where you might not be aware of harm you are doing to yourself and others. And you can’t always use your thinking mind to just will yourself to stop.
In fact, traumatic situations can put your thinking mind and survival nervous system against each other
we can help each other engage our social nervous system through giving each other safety cues which can help bring senses back to these frozen parts of the body and psyche
anyway those are just some notes on me learning how to bring some blood back into the frozen spaceship I call a body
Learning a whole lot from this model, especially in terms of how this is a relational practice and that expecting ourselves to be able to do it alone can create more shame which contributes to numbing and shame avoidance strategies https://traumastewardship.com/
