English is a "skill". Like Math. No more no less. English like Persian is not an "Indian language" but a language "historically" used for administration.
English was a way of getting ahead 70 years back just like 70 years before 1857 , Persian was a way of getting ahead. Raja Ram Mohan Ray was knowledgeable in Persian and English .
English was a marker of power as long as English speaking people ( British or Indian) were in power . Things change .....
The world changed between 1989 to 1992 . The changes of those 3 years were fundamental to we were as a country . The India which we see today is outcome of those changes .....English as a skill is one of those changes
Who knows Persian today in India, considering till 1857 Persian was the Court and administrative language in India and the court and language of interaction , instruction and business of much of the then known world.
As a result of replacement of Persian by English , huge number of people lost their reason for existence and their place in the hierarchy of Indian society. It also created new winners. This bred anger and resentment.
But it didn't matter as the world had changed . The dominance of English as a global language of the world , is not so assured now. This also reflects a change in times.
There will also be winners and loosers with this change away from English and also it's fair share of resentment. But the arc of
history is neither static nor kind but it bends towards justice ...
Ironically , it is Sanskrit now shorn of historical groups proficient at it , is best placed to fill this void in India of a neutral official language. As everybody is as much or as less proficient at it as anyone else.
Babasaheb Ambedkar and Swami Vivekananda would have agreed to Sanskrit as the great unifier of India. But for the "state" to recognise it requires a decolonisation of the mind of the Indian elites..but am hopeful that would happen too ...in time.
