In many ways we misread Britain.

We got Boris Johnson as prime minister not because of Brexit..

..but rather we got Brexit because much of the English population likes the “idea of Boris Johnson”. He represents a very English longing for effortless lazy national superiority.

That’s why the Conservatives are still polling well. 30 000 preventable deaths “is not patriotic” so a good chunk of the English population simply ignores it.

This also explains why COVID has had a greater effect on Scottish independence support than anticipated in London.

This explains Keir Starmer’s careful behaviour. He needs to keep highlighting Johnson’s incompetence but scrupulously avoid falling into the “unpatriotic trap” on Brexit & COVID.

It’s frustrating to watch but is the only option.

The route to getting the Tories out lies on a “Britain deserves better” & “support our nurses” ticket - not refighting Brexit.

I can’t see a Labour govt not going for a revised trade deal which wraps UK industry into EU single market - but you can’t fight this battle now.
