Yesterday I confronted a senior scientist with a terrible review he made for us, shamelessly pushing >20 self citations that were not even relevant. His defense: “sorry, it wasn’t me but a post-doc who didn’t know any better”. This is wrong on so many levels... [1/n]
1st of all, even if you believe this “excuse” (and I’m not sure I do), it is failed mentorship. If you let a postdoc do a review for training purposes (which in principle may be a good idea) then you should always check and discuss it, before submitting under your own name. [2/n]
2nd, if you think that a postdoc is up to the job, then you should let him/her take the credit instead of using your own name! This is failed leadership & shunning of responsibility. We won’t ask him to review again and will check across journals if this is a one-off or not [3/n]
