Had my occasional drink with a Brexiter last night. We talked about COVID and government handling of the pandemic. Care homes. “Oh counting those who would’ve died anyway. That old leftie argument...” Johnson knows his audience well and how to play them.
There is a very distinct age factor amongst all these discussions. I know have hope (knowing the handful I do) that the next gen will bounce back better, stronger and more appreciative of their lot.
If you’ve never had to fight for anything in your life (and no, I’m not advocating war as a path to appreciation of life!) you take what you have very much for granted. I sit on the cusp of these two mindsets. My strength is I love learning new things about myself and the world.
I think internal struggle is the answer, and those internal struggles are won and lost on the field of education. Arming our young with knowledge and the confidence to challenge the arseholes who are running the show right now is the only defence of the future.
