A thread on New Education Policy:

-> School Education:
1) Change in Structure from 3+10+2 to 5+3+3+4.
2) In the First 5 years, kids will be taught basic maths, and basic foundation learning courses.
3) From 6th std, there would be small internships to observe and learn.
4) More Focus oh Vocational and life skills
5) Technology Integration. Kids will be even taught coding.
6) No Discrimination between Science/Arts. Can club courses from science with Arts. Can choose to do physics with music.
7) There would be nothing called as “extra-curricular”. Even sports/music would be part of the curriculum.
8) Holistic report card of student, which says which skills the student is good at, which skill he needs to improve on. Less focus on marks attained. More focus on skills
gained. Every student will leave the system with minimum 1 skill ( in most cases more than 1)
9) Most Important: Less focus on board examinations.

-> Higher Education:
1) Gross Enrolment ratio is about 26%. Only 26% want to go for higher education currently.
Target to move it to above 50% in next 15 years. To get this, Govt will increase its spending to 6% of GDP, which is currently at less than 4%.
2) Common entrance exams to be held for admission to universities and higher education institutions. All higher education institutions
except legal and medical colleges, to be governed by single regulator.
3) All institutes to offer multidisciplinary courses by 2030. Institutes offering single courses will be phased out.
4) Credit Transfer and Academic Bank of Credits. You can leave the college mid way(due to financial circumstances or otherwise), and restart from the point you left. Your grades/credits earned will be stored digitally. One can take a years break, if you need to support family
financially, and be back to studies, a year after.
5) More Focus on Research work.

-> Teachers Training
1) Professional standards to be set for Teachers under National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) that will be developed by 2022.
2) By 2030, the minimum degree qualification for teaching will be a 4-year integrated B.Ed. degree.
3) The 2-year B.Ed. programmes will also be offered only for those who have already obtained Bachelor’s Degrees in other specialized subjects.
Adapted 1-year B.Ed. programmes for those who have completed the equivalent of 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor’s Degrees or who have obtained a Master’s degree in a specialty and wish to become a subject teacher in that specialty.
3) All B.Ed. programmes will include training in time-tested as well as the most recent techniques in pedagogy, including pedagogy with respect to foundational literacy and numeracy, multi-level teaching and evaluation, teaching children with disabilities, teaching children with
Spcl interests or disabilities, use of educational technology, and learner-centered and collaborative learning.
5) Shorter post-B.Ed. courses will also be made widely available, at colleges and universities, to teachers who may wish to move into more specialized areas of teaching
Two points which I think need to be still addressed:
1) Medical Education - Doctors to Patients ratio is pathetic. It comes under the purview of Health Ministry, and does not come under Ministry of Education. Hence, not a part of these changes. But needs to be seriously looked at
2) Education on Climate Change. I think it’s of utmost importance to make children aware about climate change and environment. More they learn from a young age, more they will force the institutions they work for to be environment friendly.
Overall really happy with the changes announced. Again this won’t be an overnight change. It is going to take good 10-15 years to see the benefits.
A big thank you to Dr. K Kasturirangan (ex-Chairman of ISRO), who was the Chairman of the drafting committee and the whole team who worked on the New Education Policy
