The day M.Phil., is abolished I want to recollect a tale from my University. Like Rajinikanth says "system sariyillai" so scrapping an useless degree only good to that extent ... M.Phil., was considered a step in aid for P.Hd., That is what it was when we enrolled
Of the two theory papers we had one was on research methodology. Can't understand why we needed a written exam on it. Then there was a mark on theory and first, second class etc., Awarded. That was the time the degree was becoming compulsory for getting a teaching job in colleges
We enrolled and then came the first UGC lecturership exam, and it was tough and very few of us got through. Then we have come to the stage where even with a P.Hd., and CET whatever getting a teaching job at University/colleges isn't easy. But, what I wanted to recall is
Something that happened to a senior. She was a student at the Uni and a "politically" sensitive dept. Studious, from a poor family and needed the degree to find a job soon as she finished it. Unfortunately, her caste and her guides caste were not friendly with other top guys
End result, the student ended up with a second class. She couldn't believe it. She was broken. Next three years she went around fighting for revaluation. Nothing happened. She lost so many years and finally landed at a private college...That was a bitter fight, a caste centric
fight I had seen. Any system, anywhere can have favouritism, politics etc., But, somehow our academic system seems beyond redemption. M.Phil is gone. So far so good. What about P.hds are they going to be fair?
