Code Geass is my favorite anime. But its not my favorite anime because of its "realistic" approach to politics, strategy or philosophy. In a world of such pronounced "theatrics" and supernatural ability, I think its kind of hard to approach those face value, realistically.
Code Geass' greatest strength and weakness, is that it consistently prioritizes entertainment value and leaves its deep, analytical, human aspects under its surface to be its second priority.
Code Geass has only become better for me, on every single one of my rewatches. Every single time, I have found something new that I didn't find earlier and that's why it has consistently stayed as my favorite.
On surface level, its strategies may appear bombastic and unlikely, its sense of politics may seem unrealistic and exaggerated and its philosophy may feel cheap and unfocused to some.
But under its surface level, Code Geass to me at least has some of the greatest core themes, most human and imperfect characters and has aspects that are far deeper than many would give it credit for.
Code Geass is far from perfect. But I wholeheartedly believe that they people who genuinely hate and look down on this show, do so out of misunderstanding and prioritizing elements that Code Geass never truly attempts to prioritize.
Is it the most realistic piece of fiction ever? No far from it. Does it masterfully handle politics or philosophy as well as some other series? No, watch Eva or LOTGH if you want that. But does it have incredible underlying themes and amazingly human characters? Hell yes it does
