1/ @JaValeMcGee’s “Life in the Bubble” YouTube vlog is incredible.

I recently spoke with McGee’s producer — Devin Dismang ( @dismayne) — and he told me their creative process for the best NBA bubble show.

A thread 👇
2/ Dismang worked with the GS Warriors from 2015-2019 (celebrated 3 titles).

He met McGee when the center joined the Warriors in 2016.

Dismang says McGee expresses interest in the creative process behind video from day one.

They’ve partnered on content ever since.
3/ When McGee was packing for the Orlando bubble, he asked Dismang if he should bring a camera.

Dismang said yes and McGee ended up bringing three (Sony a6500, Sony a7, Go Pro Hero 7).
4/ To get into the workflow of an NBA player (who aren’t staring at emails all day), Dismang set McGee up with a shared Dropbox with a folder that literally says “Drop New Footage Here”.

McGee records everything on the Disney campus, producing 30-40 gigs of raw video a day.
5/ Dismang gets up at ~10am CT and combs through all the files he receives.

If anything new comes up during the day, the players (he also works with @troydaniels and @QCook323) text or FaceTime him.

He’ll spend 8-12hr a day in Adobe Premier Pro selecting and editing clips.
6/ Dismang says it’s a “tedious” process and there are no shortcuts.

He has to watch all of it to find the gold nuggets.

e.g.: “If I was watching at 2x, I would have missed this great clip of Anthony Davis saying ‘purple til the day I die’[referring to scrimmage jersey color].”
7/ Aside from hoops, McGee is also an accomplished music producer (he wrote and produced a track on @justinbieber’s new album).

His producer name is Pierre and each vlog is laced with his tracks.

Here is a vlog excerpt of an absolute banger titled “Off The Flow”.
8/ I pause this thread to show a @KingJames vlog sighting.
9/ The final product is optimized for YouTube, distilled to 10-20 minutes (from ~3-4hrs of raw video).

Dismang sends to JaVale for a final check (make sure there’s nothing sensitive).

Then it goes live.

Of the 8 episodes so far, avg. view count is ~1.5mn 🔥
