In many cases, the current epidemic of loneliness is the amplification of an already existing side effect of capitalism: a whole lot of people don't experience community outside of commercial spaces. Folks are unnaturally unmoored. We need to cure more than a disease.
We're social animals. We were built to survive thru cooperative efforts. Individualism & capitalism disconnect us from one another for a reason. Our collective survival can't be the priority under capitalism bc capitalism will always cut its losses. People have to be disposable.
When we are more invested in each other than we are in this system, we will be in a position to set terms.
This is why we all need to be building mutual aid networks in our communities. Our best chance at survival in the times ahead are the relationships & mechanisms of community care that we build now. Don't wait for hurricane season. Don't wait for more waves of sickness & eviction.
Figure out how you can connect w ppl in proximity to you about how you can have each other's backs when things go sideways, whether that's economic catastrophe, climate catastrophe, a plague or all three. It's gonna be hell and high water and then some. And we're what we've got.
