Tonight, we're going to offer our unique Project Naval Distinction🍁 take on why the @tomhanks @GreyhoundMovie 📽️🎞️is even MORE important than most people realize😮.

So, bring yourselves to immediate notice for power⚡️ and prepare to slip 🪢 and proceed to sea 🌊! #WeTheNavy
First, if you're not familiar with the film🎥 (and we hope you are!) check out the preview here 👇:

The movie 🎬 was released on July 10th, 2020 on @AppleTV+.

We'll start with a bit of background to ensure you're caught up! #navy #film #movies #WWII
The @GreyhoundMovie story is based on C.S. Forester’s 1955 book 📖, "The Good Shepherd".

The book is described as being, "deeply researched and noted for its accurate depiction of naval warfare", which clearly carries over into the film 👏. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/true-story-behind-greyhound-movie-180975077/
@tomhanks plays Commander Ernest Krause who, in 1942 after the @USNavy enters #WWII, is given command of #USNavy destroyer USS Keeling, code-named "Greyhound".

His mission: escort a convoy of merchant ships carrying vital supplies for the Allies to Europe🇪🇺.

Simple, right?
Not even close!

@tomhanks & crew must protect the convoy, along with a @RoyalNavy Tribal class destroyer (code-named "Eagle") and a @RoyalCanNavy Flower class corvette HMCS DODGE (code-named "Dicky"), against the threat of Nazi submarines🐺...for 5 days...with NO air cover😱.
Quick sidebar: the digital portrayal of @RoyalCanNavy corvette "Dicky" was actually modelled after real-life corvette @HMCSSACKVILLE1!

If you didn't know, SACKVILLE is proudly 🇨🇦Canada's official Naval Memorial and berthed alongside @portofhalifax (cc @CFBHalifax @RCN_MARLANT).
The fighting and actions scenes were inspired by real @RoyalCanNavy stories!

"Laco was inspired by close-up, real-life fights between Canadian ships and submarines — HMCS Assiniboine vs U-210, HMCS Chilliwack vs U-744, and HMCS Oakville vs U-94."
Alright, back to @GreyhoundMovie.

From our observations on @Twitter, many @RoyalCanNavy sailors were thrilled by the excitement the film offers and also appreciated the very detailed and realistic #navy dialogue, procedures and action.

#GreyhoundMovie
Check out this short "inside look" interview 🎙️ with @tomhanks in which he explains the Battle of the Atlantic ( #BOA)⚓️🚢and the concept of the @GreyhoundMovie 🎞️📽️:
The Battle of the Atlantic was the LONGEST campaign of #WWII which began at the very beginning of the war 🪖⚔️and continued right until the end.

Victory at sea 🌊was ESSENTIAL to maintaining the Allied 🇨🇦🇫🇷🇬🇧🇺🇸 war effort and keeping Britain in the fight.
Unfortunately, while it is possible to visit the beaches 🏖️ of Normandy 🪂(check out @JunoBeachCentre!) and other battle sites, and to visit the graveyards 🪦 where many, many fallen warriors were laid to rest, you cannot [easily] visit sites where battles took place at sea.
Even if you did visit a battle site at sea🌊, you'd have to dive on a wreck to get a even a partial sense of what the fighting ⚔️ might have been like.

This creates a HUGE difficulty in trying to connect with the public.

The @RoyalCanNavy calls it "maritime blindness".
Here's where we offer our unique take:

@GreyhoundMovie absolutely NAILS ✅ remembrance of the Battle of the Atlantic in a way that shows how the presents efforts to remember the #BOA miss the mark🎯.

The secret?

KEEP. IT. SIMPLE.

#LestWeForget #CanadaRemembers #WWII #navy
In many of their materials, the #RCNavy highlights how BIG the Battle of the Atlantic was:

The number of ships lost.
The number of sailors lost.
The tonnes of vital supplies lost.
The big anniversaries (this year, the 75th).

Numbers. Stats. BIG‼️
Why do Canadians know #VimyRidge🪖 and #BillyBishop🛩️? Because Vimy was ONE battle and Bishop was ONE hero, both of which represent Canadian military excellence, on land and in the air.

They are incredible historical events which are more easily remembered by people.📖
Trying to get Canadians to not only remember, but appreciate, the Battle of the Atlantic by focusing on BIG‼️ is not effective.

Think about how difficult it would be for the average Canadian to keep track of all the battles and lives lost during #WWI. 🤔
So, how does @tomhanks and @GreyhoundMovie do it?

1⃣ captain. 1⃣ crew. 1⃣ convoy. 1⃣ crossing.

KEEP. IT. SIMPLE.✅

That simplicity allowed focus on the details which make the experience of what it must have been like at sea🌊 come alive for the audience😀!

#GreyhoundMovie
Our approach at Project Naval Distinction🍁 has been to promote the #VimyRidge and #BillyBishop of the @RoyalCanNavy: #HMCSHaida.

HAIDA is the "fightingest" ship in Canadian history and, thanks to the incredible work of our 💯% volunteer team, now the #Flagship of the #RCNavy!
Promoting the incredible exploits of #HMCSHaida and her first Commanding Officer, Canada's greatest naval hero, Harry DeWolf, is an effective way to capture the imagination and [importantly] the attention of 🇨🇦Canadians!

Attention is critical to #remembrance and #recognition.
The naming of the @RoyalCanNavy DeWolf class Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) after DeWolf and other Canadian naval heroes is an excellent demonstration of how the small steps the #RCNavy is taking to highlight exciting parts of our history.

For more, check out the works of @RoyalCanNavy history authors, such as @RLitwiller and @s_e_livingston, who have written excellent books 📖 focusing on the exploits of specific ships of the #RCNavy.

Or learn of the heroes and history promoted by @HerosofCanada! #LestWeForget
In conclusion: @GreyhoundMovie and @tomhanks have been able to take the important and BIG‼️ Battle of the Atlantic & break it down into a thrilling, digestible and detailed experience for modern audiences.

Its SIMPLE✅ approach will do much good for #remembrance & #recognition.
If you've appreciated our take and our 💯% volunteer efforts to promote recognition of ALL branches of the @CanadianForces (including the @RoyalCanNavy 🇨🇦⚓️), we'd be grateful for a RT or a follow (or both!) 👏.
