#Thread A lot is being said about @chennaipolice_ and Commissioner @copmahesh1994 by various groups. Let us examine the facts of some recent controversial cases. I will not get into Karuppar Koottam issue since it is to do with religious sentiments.
Same would be and has been applicable for people who hurt religious sentiments of any religion. I think we can agree on that. Let us begin with @MaridhasAnswers . News18 TN filed 2 cases against him - one for defamation of its editor and journalists. Other was for a fraud email.
Defamation cannot be registered by the police. Complainant has to go to court. News18 TN did that and got an interim injunction. As for fraud email - both sides claim they didn't send it. Matter is being investigated. It could be an unknown 3rd party that sent it too.
If it is found that @MaridhasAnswers created the fraud email or that he knew of its creation, action will be taken against him. Fair enough?

Next we move to @sansbarrier who was detained and released the same day. Sections against him involve cyber stalking & women harassment.
Now take a look at a circular issued by the DGP of Tamil Nadu reported in today's Hindu daily.
As per the sections under which @sansbarrier is charged, max punishment is 3 years. Police cannot legitimately arrest & remand him. You can thank Sathankulam police for this. But one group cries Sanghi police while another group says "we took great efforts to bring him out".
Both narratives stink. It was merely procedural. Let me remind you that the previous CoP too took similar action against @sansbarrier . Detained him & released him the same day for similar charges filed by a different journalist. No cries of Sanghi police then?
Let us come to the Dr Subbaiah case. Those saying there's been a compromise - there is NO compromise. Police have not received any such letter. Case is open, probe is on. I hope the affected lady does give a complaint, since a proxy complaint is invalid.
Lumpen elements like that doctor definitely need to be behind bars. The larger question though - there's something wrong with the law. Anybody can slander anyone baselessly and get away with it because the law has no provisions to provide harsh punishment.
A defamation case can take years to be resolved in court. No arrest under cyber crime sections unless in extraordinary cases. So perpetrators get away with their impunity. That is the core issue to be addressed. The rest is pure narrative to suit what one thinks is right.
A tough election is round the corner. The lies and twisting of facts have begun. I would suggest everyone stay calm and examine facts before coming to conclusions.
