if i can be a little candid and crazy here i never got the whole... “usopp didn’t respect luffy as the captain” take. like... is making jokes about being in charge/calling luffy dumb disrespect... bc if that’s the case wheres the flogging of literally every other crew member
never rly put this into words before but like it always rubbed me the wrong way bc usopp thinking his captain is wrong and being willing to argue rather than passively going Yes sir isn’t the same as not respecting the captain.. or if it is maybe im confused cuz it’s out of tone
like yeah they were all going on about being a Proper Crew and how real captains don’t take that from their subordinates but also like. since when has luffy or any of them cared about being proper pirates or having a hierarchy.. you can’t pick and choose when 2 have boundaries
also usopp did respect luffy’s authority and said merry was his ship which was the reason for a duel being necessary in the first place? prior to w7 usopp never made any attempt to usurp luffy or seriously challenge any major decision of his
i see ppl saying shit like “he was trying to mutiny” like no tf he wasn’t... he didn’t want them to lose merry cuz he felt merry was alive and skypeia gave him reason to believe that. he never tried to rally the others against luffy or say luffy shouldn’t be captain
like he acted like they were on equal terms which is normal and healthy for a close friendship... but luffy was still always in charge and he complained or clashed with a lot of luffys decisions bc he was scared but never actually fought them
but with merry he felt he had to take a stand because it wasn’t just about his own personal discomfort any more it was about him feeling like they were abandoning a member of the crew. and that argument was derailed anyway bc they both lost their temper and luffy told him to go
like the strawhats literally never acted like a typical pirate crew or showed much outward respect for their captain (which they even talked about in alabasta) and it was part of what made them unique and was why they truly believed in luffy!! the only exception was that argument
idk man I think you can act like equals and close friends or you can act like a superior and his subordinates but you really can’t have both esp not at a bunch of teenagers’ maturity level
like obviously you can have boundaries in a relationship but if you’ve never asserted those boundaries before or pick and choose when they matter then it’s going to unquestionably result in conflict esp when you’re dealing with someone who’s already insecure and unstable
idk man if usopp hadn’t argued and had sucked it up and taken luffy’s decision lying down they’d all be dead in enies lobby plus he’d doubt his (correct) intuitions even more... but still every1 acts like he was wrong about everything and had to grovel
ive seen SO many people say shit like “luffys too kind” “luffy should’ve killed him/shouldn’t have let him come back” like every w7 comment section i guarantee at least one and i just cannot imagine having that poor a grasp of a situation
don’t get me wrong it’s good that usopp apologised for being stubborn and projecting his own insecurities but i still think he was owed an apology too for how they all treated him given he was right about merry being alive and had literally just been through hell 🤷🏻‍♀️
like i pretend things went down different bc i hate suffering but realistically i think the aftermath of w7 would’ve just left usopp even more uncertain about his standing with them and walking on eggshells around them which is a recipe for another spiral and breakdown
like bc a power structure has been enforced but not consistently what you’re left with is like. Better not risk that happening again and behave myself / not challenge them or speak out any more bc i am scared of being left behind
and when you consider how the fight started bc usopp was scared about being left behind.. all the development over that arc showing he was crucial to the crew... and the ending note on it was... “we are fully prepared to leave you behind, and will literally do so unless you beg”
in what world does that translate to “well this issue is resolved and I feel happy and comfortable with you all now. My insecurities are addressed and we can all move on as a strong united front”
