A reminder of the persistence of the many challenges of our neighbors: I’m at a red light on speakerphone w/ Theresa (yes, hands free, phone nazis) & I roll down my window to say hi to a struggling neighbor & give her a tactical caring kit from the back seat...I recognize her..
Haven’t seen her in two years. But I place her when I ask how’s she’s doing & she says ‘I wish my daughter would get arrested to save her life.’ I remember her saying the same thing two years ago during an arrest maybe 200 yards & 730 days from where we are now. She’s so frail.
I chat as much as I can until the light turns green & I drive away while her light is always red & she’s stuck. Theresa asks who I was talking to & I say ‘some neighbor, I don’t remember her name. I do remember her worried about her daughter’s drug addiction.’ Long ride home
So I call the kits we hand out to our struggling neighbors‘tactical caring kits’ because maybe cops like that term since it’s used everywhere but also cuz it’s my tactic to get us out of our cars & in to the lives of the people we swore to serve & protect. And something happened.
As soon as I had something to give to my neighbors, I saw them. Everywhere.
As soon as I had something to connect with my neighbors, I saw them.
Everywhere.
Seeing is a tactic in the strategy of acknowledging, caring, & accepting responsibility for your neighbors. Everywhere.
