As an editor, I have been thinking about the capitalization of White vs. Black... I think capitalizing ultimately helps distinguish a black & white issue versus a Black & White issue, for lack of a better example. https://twitter.com/karenattiah/status/1288464078671949825
We capitalize concepts. When we’re talking about Black Lives Matter we are talking about the concept/movement, unfortunately this is the same with White Supremacy. They both identify a concept and a group being looked at.
To show an example: I still use white Americans and black Americans in my writings if I were talking about Americans in general. If I were talking about specifically the concept of White America or Black America, these would be capitalized.
Having attended many workshops and listened to many scholars working in Black Studies and Critical Race Theory within Art History, these issues with capitalizing are *in practice* left to the prudence of the author and should be handled in a case to case basis.
