Been discussing with friends how non-disabled actors playing "disabled" roles cause real-time harm to disabled people.

Fellow disabled folks, I would love to hear from you about how media depictions have personally caused you harm.
For me, growing up a physically disabled trans person who never saw themselves represented in any form of media, not seeing myself represented made me feel like I was alone.

I hated myself. I hated being different. I hated being disabled. I was suicidal from the time I was 5.
Seeing so much media where wheelchair users die, often because we kill ourselves or because it often makes non-disabled people feel better to know that disabled people die, I thought that I would probably never make it to my 40th birthday... Which is this year.
I didn't believe I would have a future.

I thought being suicidal was justifiable because "who would want to be disabled?"
Often nondisabled writers project their unspoken fear of becoming disabled themselves onto disabled characters and disabled stories.
I would like all non-disabled people to postulate on this.

The movies you see with nondisabled playing disabled characters are not representative of disabled experiences. They are representative of what non-disabled writers "THINK" disabled experiences are like. They are wrong.
