The Obama Administration created the Affirmatively Further Fair Housing ( #AFFH) regulation to make sure that the cities, counties, and states who receive federal housing funds do not discriminate and that they take active steps to desegregate housing.
This regulation—along with the AFFH assessment tool—were the most concrete steps taken to fulfill the commitment made by the passage of the #FairHousingAct more than 50 years ago.
The Trump administration’s decision to end this rule is blatantly racist. It’s a step backwards in the march towards housing justice, and it allows for racial segregation to continue unchecked across our country.
Regardless of who is occupying the White House, Portland remains committed to #AFFH, & we’ve worked to strengthen the Fair Housing Act through my #FAIR ordinance—which prevents landlords from denying Portlanders housing using criteria that have long been used as a proxy for race.
