I spent a many years in apartments as a kid and a few in “low income housing” and let me be very very clear:
Fuck this guy
Fuck this guy
I've had time to marinate on this a bit and I still feel this rage when I revisit his tweet.
My parents were working class folks (mom: secretary. dad: cook). We lived in a rental house until I was 8 in a middle class neighborhood. Even that young I felt diff b/c we rented 2/x

When mom and dad split up when I was 8, we moved into a 2 bed apartment. Mom+sister+1 brother+me. The stigma of living in an apartment was REAL. We were the poor kids.
My dad moved into a shithole of a place down the street and drove a beatup 77 impala (w/ rusted hood!). 3/x

Getting dropped off at school in that car and going home to those apartments imprinted me for the rest of my life. I felt shame. What did I, as an 8 year old kid do to deserve that? 4/x
What I learned from ages of 8-13 is that the people who lived in those apartments would have KILLED to own a house in a nice suburban neighborhood. They craved the stability of home ownership. They were (mostly) wonderful people who worked their asses off in low paying jobs 5/x
To see the president say "hey rich (white) people, don't worry, I'll keep the poor (black) people out of your neighborhood" reminds me of the shame I felt as a young poor kid. No one deserves that. /end
(to be clear: being a poor white kid is still *significantly* easier than being a poor black / hispanic kid)
