For your cerebral pleasure, I offer you the five largest ranked ballot races in the history of Canada:
#5) The 2012 @ndp leadership race, with 128,351 eligible voters. The ballots were tabulated by a Spanish company named @Scytl. I don't know how they pronounce that, but I hope it's "Skittle". Tom Mulcair won, on the fourth round.
#4) The following year, the @liberal_party hosted their own leadership race, with 130,774 registered voters. The ranked ballots were tabulated by @dominionvoting (which to any Canadian over the age of 40, sounds like a grocery chain). Trudeau won on the first ballot.
#3) The third largest ranked ballot race in Canadian history isn't a leadership race at all, but the 2018 election for @CityofLdnOnt's mayor + council. I was there on election day, witnessing the historic implementation (also tabulated by @dominionvoting!)
London's election had 244,962 eligible voters and experienced a very smooth tabulation process. Ed Holder was elected mayor after 14 rounds of voting. I'll have lots of fun data to share, when the #TimeToTopple report is done!: http://www.unlockdemocracy.ca/time_to_topple
#2) @CPC_HQ held Canada's second-largest ranked ballot election in 2017, with 259,010 eligible voters. Andrew Scheer won on the 14th round of counting - despite trailing Maxime Bernier on every previous round! (I was there all day, as an observer) https://twitter.com/meslin/status/868532351718084608
This election was ALSO implemented by @dominionvoting! It's funny how city clerks across Ontario (most recently in Barrie) keep saying that the technology doesn't exist yet to tabulate ranked ballots. Clerks: do your homework. 🙄 I suggest starting here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Content/Committee/421/ERRE/Brief/BR8511499/br-external/DominionVoting-e.pdf
#1) And the largest ranked ballot race ever in the history of Canada? It's happening in a couple of weeks! đź’Ą With 269,469 eligible voters, the 2020 @CPC_HQ leadership race is the largest Instant-Runoff race we've ever seen in this country. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Conservative_Party_of_Canada_leadership_election
So the next time a conservative tells you that Canada should keep using First-Past-the-Post, just laugh and remind them that their own party not only USES ranked ballots for their own races, but they are the literally the #1 ranked ballot champions of Canada.
Ranked ballots = more choice, friendlier campaigns, no vote-splitting, no strategic voting and genuine mandates. And in multi-winner elections, ranked ballots deliver proportional results. An election without a ranked ballot, isn't an election at all. It's a scam. -end-
