Because of politics and the long con, tens of millions of Americans are willing to repeatedly give the benefit of the doubt to the most documented liar in human history. What does this say about us?
I don’t think it’s that a significant portion of the population *can’t* tell truth from fiction, although there’s certainly some of that, but rather that the lines have blurred and many have given up on truth altogether.
When truth conflicts with your worldview, it can be more comfortable in the short term to simply choose sources that conform to your worldview, rather than challenge and perhaps change your worldview based on truth.
Cognitive dissonance occurs when you try to think rationally, but also hold irrational beliefs. For me I find this untenable in the long term, and it took me a long time to realize that. But so many seem able to buy in completely.
I have found that eventually truth always catches up to me, but what happens when a growing number of people have given up on truth altogether? Perhaps we’ll find out. /end
