Masks were NOT designed for

EVERYONE
EVERYWHERE
ALL-THE-TIME !!!

A thread...
1/ NO DOWN SIDES!

There’s a strain of argument for face masks suggesting that they cannot possibly have any negative down sides.

As we have seen since the start of COVID, panicked folks have become zero dimensional in their thinking. https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1278298284642021379?s=20
2/ FISH OUT OF WATER

“Sure, they reduce the rate of air flow, but airflow schmairflow!”

Mandatory rules to cover your breathing entryways should be treated with skepticism. Breathing, and the rate at which it can occur, are fairly central to living.
3/ NO FREE LUNCH

You should be skeptical of any mask that does NOT reduce the rate of flow.

Any mask that’s effective against viruses will surely considerably reduce air flow.

In fact, nearly any mask NOT effective against viruses considerably reduces air flow.
4/ COMMON SENSE

Instead, it is deemed my much of the population to be 100% common sense that covering everyone’s air holes is without down sides.

But we have learned that “common sense” doesn’t mean what many think it means. https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1254796958964858882?s=20
5/ FALLS, YOUNG

In addition to covering your kinda-important air holes, masks block your lower peripheral vision, increasing the risks of falls.

For the young and healthy fall risks are meager.

But risks of COVID for them are also meager.
6/ FALLS, OLD

For the old w/ comorbidities, falls become much more likely with a mask, & have much more severe consequences.

Given the minuscule risk of infection at restaurants/stores & limited effectiveness of face masks, risks from falls are serious https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1286355308701523974?s=20
7/ SOME PROFESSIONS WEAR MASKS

Some mask proponents argue that, say, surgeons often wear them for hours at a time. Or carpenters.

“They survive. So wear your damned mask.”
8/ ACUTE

But these advantages to masks (even supposing they work for those purposes) are in acute high risk scenarios.

Infection from COVID is rare out and about in the world, and has risks much like the flu and other colds.
9/ SELF SELECTION

Folks in occupations with a lot of required mask use self select.

The fact that there are folk who tolerate face masks does not entail everyone can.

Many people can’t tolerate face masks, and invariably avoid such occupations. But now it is thrust upon them.
10/ SMOTHER

The folks who don’t like face masks enough to avoid such occupations have a variety of reasons for this, including

~ can’t psychologically handle a face mask, feeling smothered

~ panic attacks, & can’t wear it without severe distress

~ out of breath more easily
11/ EMOTION

Most jobs where folks traditionally wear masks are not inherently social situations.

But many of those now forced to wear a mask all day are in the service industry, interacting socially all day long.
12/ UNMASKED

Having a mask blocks the facial expressions crucial for human communication, something that is the topic of my upcoming book, UNMASKED: Why We Express Emotions. Coming 2021.
13/ SPEAKING

Face masks may be fine for the carpenter working alone.

But many of those forced to wear masks have to talk all day long with others.

Face masks are not designed for that. One has to speak much louder, and that only worsens the air intake issues. And annoyance.
14/ BACKGROUND NOISE

Many jobs require communication with loud background noise, like restaurant chatter and music.

Audibility is severely compromised, and lack of emotional expressions severely compounds the issue.
15/ YELL MORE

Wearers in many social situations therefore have to be loud, and enunciate more clearly than usual.

Issues with breathing rise.

Wetness on the mask rises, now more a Petri dish.

And more virus-filled breath is pouring out the sides and top of the mask, not less.
16/ MOVEMENT

Most occupations traditionally wearing masks are not very active.

Masks aren’t designed for seeing well when moving, walking, climbing stairs.

Nor are they designed for breathing well when active. Many feel faint doing otherwise simple tasks like climbing stairs.
17/ FOG

Masks at all times can reduce vision not just because of the blocked lower periphery, but because of your warm wet breath.

For those with prescription glasses this means fogged up glasses, which only worsens with talking and activity.
18/ DISORIENTATE ME

Together, the reduced vision (periphery and fog) and light-headedness (from reduced air intake) even further raises the risks of a fall.
19/ PROFESSIONAL GRADE GOGGLES

Professionals who have to wear masks solve this by wearing professional grade goggles.

Is the gear that’s sensible for surgeons also sensible for, say, service industry personnel with radically different risks and responsibilities?
20/ INFIRM

Many are infirm and have poor breathing ability, and are unsteady to begin with.

Slowed air flow and reduced vision affects them more severely. Fall risks accordingly are higher.
21/ PRECAUTION

The Precautionary Principle demands that efforts to mandate dress on the entire population fit the highest standards of cost benefit analysis.

And, more than “dress,” these mandates concern identity- & emotional-expression-crushing dress https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1288226786413871104?s=20
22-END/

To sum up, not only were masks not designed for viruses, they were NOT designed for the general population to where all the time, everywhere.

They don’t work in all such scenarios (if they ever work).

And they have enhanced health risks when used in many scenarios.
This all comes back to the hysteria that caused all this... https://twitter.com/MarkChangizi/status/1239995212572876802?s=20
