What I wish this and similar articles brought up is the fact that the @PANYNJ can collect FAA Passenger Facility Charge fees to help pay for the AirTrain while the @MTA can't. It's worth arguing that if the N was extended to LGA with no intermediate stations that it might not be a "transit" line in the eyes of the FAA. Yeah, that's a stretch, but crazier things have been done.
I've also heard the argument that Cuomo wants to build the AT to Willetts Point because a park-and-ride can be built there as a source of revenue (and better serve his beloved suburban voters.) If true this is the tail wagging the dog and not how we should be planning transit.
