I really love Tama, I think she's great. She's quite easily a top 3 Gintama girl for me personally, and I adore everything about her. Her character design, her personality and what she adds thematically to the series... (THREAD) https://twitter.com/Tharizdun03/status/1288522918138454017
First of all, her character design is phenomenal, which for me makes her the cutest looking Gintama girl purely by her appearance.
Her personality is just as great. I adore what she adds to the series comedically, wether its how she reacts to the people around her and their antics, or her drinking oil, or puking out finished food or her being able to communicate with other machines, lol.
Tama wants nothing more but to be of use to humans, as she is a machine, she sees this as her single purpose. She always wants to listen to people, give them advice and cheer them up. She's so sweet.
I also adore her relationship with the other characters. Her & Gintoki's relationship seem almost like a father-daughter relationship to me (and Gintoki really takes the role as a father during the marriage arrangement with Yamazaki lol).
I also really like what she added to Kintoki, while not heavily explored, it's neat how she changed him for the better. If you know me, you know I love Kintama, so I already thought Kintoki was great, but their moment in SS was a really nice touch.
But, my favourite part of Tama is easily the emotional part, what her arc adds to the series thematically. She's a robot, and she has difficulties at first truly understand human emotions but she does the best she can, and she does improve at this.
She gets a better understanding of them, and she herself gets more expressive with her own emotions, and she starts to always try helping people out. All of this, thanks to her family.
Tama is basically a kid, so she's very impressionable, so it's important for the people around her to act as good role models for her. Which, admittedly, doesn't aways go perfectly, but the people in Kabuki District are good people at heart, and she learns compassion from them.
This makes for some really great moments, wether it's in the Kintama arc, when she and Sadaharu are the only ones that remember Gintoki, and she reminds Gintoki that he is irreplaceable and motivates him to fight back...
or in the Forever be Yorozuya movie where she helps them out to save the future and restore everything to what it should be...
Or when she got me teary eyed about a fucking vending machine, trying to reassure the vending machine that even if the shop closes down or it malfunctions, it'll still have a purpose, that it'll be fine, and her protecting it once the shop does close down...
or in the Silver Soul arc, where she heroically sacrifices herself along with Kintoki, and Gengai basically just lost his children a second time.
As one of the main themes of the series is to fill up your hollow soul with the connections of others, of your family, Tama is literally a prefect display of this, growing from a robot not understanding emotions, to a girl who's thankful for her family that have filled her soul.
There's a reason as to why her name, "Tama", means "soul." And, she adds a beautiful touch to the last chapter of the series. She's incredible and I love her. Stan Tama.
Somehow to forgot to mention this, but Otose raising her as one of her own, obviously also had a huge part in Tama's "ubringing" and in jer becoming the kind girl that she is.
