In guest posting here, I keep seeing the button for adding audio posts to Twitter.

And I have so so many thoughts about it, being "hard of hearing" #HoH.
#HearingLoss
I'm sensitive enough about it that I've turned the feature off on my own account.
Because it feels like it's taunting me...

"here's another potentially cool, fun thing that you can't participate in because the world doesn't care that you exist!"
As a #disabled person with fatigue issues? That button should be a Godsend for me.

It should make my Twittet life so much easier. I could do a lot more advocacy work if I wasn't slowed by typing out thoughts.

But
you
can't
caption.
So I can't use this version.

How can I create content that people can't access?

My organization is literally called #EverywhereAccessible.

As in "we won't rest until access is equal & everywhere."
The most frustrating part is

if they had an upload button
in addition to the record button?

I could upload caotioned audios.

Which I can already do - as video. It's just not as cool looking.

I want to look cool too!
And since someone always asks "why don't you just turn it up?"

OMG THANK YOU!

YOU SOLVED IT!

I NEVER THOUGHT OF

INCREASING
THE
GODDAMN
VOLUME??!
Non-spicy answer for the few sincerely curious but not rachet enough to ask:

There's more than one type of hearing issue & it's not always because of your ears.

I have discrimination & high frequency hearing loss. Turning the volume up is of very limited effectiveness.
I also have nerve issues that give me auditory processing issues.

So even when I *can* hear,

sounds don't always get interpreted by my nerve endings
in a way that makes sense to me.
Not that I should have to say more than I NEED CAPTIONS.

#NoMoreCraptions

I need them and my attempts to show up as my excellent self in the world are often thwarted by this.
Imagine how you'd feel
if every time a text tweet
came across the screen,

you couldn't access it without an additional tool to decipher the symbols into words you can read.

If every article you got was a whole ass spy decryption operation.
Meanwhile your peer group is already on to the next thing.

But you have to take longer

to do your research,
to read your email,
to anything

... every time.
Having extra barriers for what should be a small part of life is super annoying.

Kinda frustrating right?

If you aren't marginalized or disabled? Tell me how long it took you to decipher that.

Now imagine that for A THIRD OF THE CONTENT YOU ENCOUNTER.

(The correct answer is Available further down this thread.)
It's not the frustration & extra unpaid labor.

- it creates a sub-class

when it's optional for other people in the world
to provide the basucs
that would ensure everyone can participate.
I get information later.

It takes me longer to research.

And cuts into the time I have to make my own content accessible.

Which for me means I can't release content on a regular schedule.
ALSO WHY IS MAKING THINGS ACCESSIBLE, ITSELF INACCESSIBLE?!!!
Are you experiencing #HearingLoss?

How frustrated are you with navigating social and/or the web?

What kind of coping skills have you learned?

Do you still mask on autopilot?
I *still* pretend to have understood what was said. Sometimes force of habit.

Sometimes it’s easier than dealing with people’s prejudices.

Let’s talk about it. We should talk about it more.
