I don’t think Tommy and David would break up so much as David would try to move the relationship to the next level and Tommy would reveal that he didn’t know that David thought that they were dating.
Tommy is David’s type, a speedster with serious abandonment issues who is in no way ready to be in a relationship.
I would like to see a Tommy focused book because his relationship to being queer has got be radically different than his brother’s, him dealing with that would be fascinating, and this is all hypothetical because it will never happen.
You take a guy who starts off with abandonment and inferiority issues due to his relationship with his parents, which we never see, and put him on a team with his newly discovered brother who has a happy home life, a loving long term boyfriend, and godlike super powers.
Tommy goes from being a troubled kid with maybe the most dangerous power set in New Jersey to Wiccan’s brother. Someone who is like him, but with a solid support system and people who love him. And Tommy sees that even with that, Billy’s still got issues. So what’s there for him?
We see Tommy being uncomfortable with attention and affection. He can’t stay with Billy’s family, though they accept him as one of their own. He pursues Kate even though she’s into Eli because Tommy knows she’ll reject him. It doesn’t feel good, but it’s at least familiar
How can he exist in queer spaces without feeling like a pale shadow of his brother, again? For all his doubts and misgivings about himself, Billy’s always been comfortable in his own sexuality in a way Tommy clearly hasn’t.
Long story short, Tommy has a lot going on that probably means that he’s not in a good place to be part of a long term relationship, but doesn’t really get enough narrative space to sort out those issues.
