My main #tipsfornewdocs:
- look after your eating & sleeping patterns. Don't be a martyr, if you're anything like I was, you'll just get migraines.
Incidentally, aspirin 600mg is beaut for migraines... 1/ https://twitter.com/gmcuk/status/1288535160015773698
- No one will 'datix you'. Incident reports are about incidents & systems. Not enough doctors put them in. You should. We'll know we have reached a safe system when doctors 'datix themselves'. You will learn from negative experiences so don't beat yourself up. #tipsfornewdocs 2/
- If you get a complaint, it will feel like the end of the world. It felt like that for me. It wasn't. Find a friendly consultant. Speak to ES & PALS. Reflect. Take a day. Then think about response. #tipsfornewdocs 3/
- If you're not well enough to go to work, don't. Your patients need you healthy. Don't feel bad about this. #tipsfornewdocs 4/
Practical tips:
- Handing over bloods for nights/weekend? Explain why. If you can't explain why, don't do it.
- Asked to re-site a cannula? Ask why. Sometimes people can drink & needles aint nice.
- Have lots of pens. Get bright coloured ones: they won't be stolen #tipsfornewdocs
Career tips:
- Don't stress about CV boosting in F1. Focus on 1 major life transition at a time! You'll have time later.
- Saying that, do teach medical students. You're their role model now. They want to be you. Set an example of kindness (and get them coffee) #tipsfornewdocs 6/
- Call yourself 'doctor'. Don't undersell yourself: you worked 5+ hard years for this. Own the title & the responsibilities that come with it.*
*Just don't be a d*** about it, ok? 😂

Most of all - try to enjoy it when you can! Being a doctor is a privileged position & you can make huge differences. But you can have fun too! Enjoy the little victories & the big ones will follow. #tipsfornewdocs 8/end
