If you’re UNDER 25 - you can’t afford to skip this

The CEO of the brain
The part of the body that makes you, you.

The Prefrontal Cortex

A Thread on the 🧠
September 13th, 1848

Phineas Gage and his coworkers are building a railway line in Vermont, something they’ve done a thousand times.

The team drills a hole, fills it with gunpowder & starts packing it down with tamping iron.

When they pushed the iron into the hole...
the rod hit the rock wall and caused a spark.

That spark lit the gunpowder, shooting the rod out of the hole & into Phineas Gages left cheek.
Phineas is dead.

He’s laying on the ground, 3.5 ft (1meter) rod going through his skull.

His coworkers are deciding what to do, out of nowhere Phineas starts moving & talking.

He's helped up, driven to a local hotel for aid & begins explaining in detail what happened to him.
Doctors start working on the hemorrhaging, infection, and get the iron rod out of his head. During the process they realized Phineas had damaged his prefrontal cortex.

He begin his healing process and by April 1849 (less than a year later) he saw his doctor for the last time...
.. & The Dr. stated “he is good health & recovering”
Phineas was an nice, fair, respectable man in his community - before.
After - he had a ~3 year spell of intense personality change.
He became indulgent, fitful, & using “the grossest profanity” (remember this is the 1800s)
Essentially - this hard working, soft tempered man had a severe change in personality within 2 years of damaging his prefrontal cortex.

His CEO function was damaged.

What made him, him, was damaged.
The prefrontal cortex doesn’t mature until the age of 25.
That’s why its’s important for younger folk to keep reading

- You can severely damage your prefrontal cortex without having a 4ft rod go through it. (I’ll explain how soon)
⬇️
We’ll start with The Functions:

The functions for humans are huge - 30% of our brain is prefrontal cortex (compared to 11% for the next largest, Chimpanzees.)

- Focus
- Forethought
- Judgment
- Impulse control
- Organization
- Planning
- Empathy
....
- Learning from the mistakes that you make.

A healthy prefrontal cortex keeps you in check.

It keeps you focused on your goals, patience with others feelings, and stops some of our more hedonistic impulses.
(Frontal lobe issues go with a
- higher incidence of school failure
- divorce
- job failure
- legal issues
- speeding tickets
- incarceration
- financial problems
- & mental health issues, especially ADD and addictions)
For girls ~90% of your IQ is found here.

(If you’ve seen Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket is a good representation of your frontal lobes.)

How You’re Damaging Your Frontal Lobes ⬇️⬇️
If you see things on this list you identify with - you’re creating an unhealthy brain region that controls a majority of your life.

- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Drug use (marijuana use)
- Low omega 3 (Found in seafood)
- Inflammation (diet can cause this)
- Low vitamins B, C, and D
.
- Porn
- Low zinc,
- Low cholesterol (Eat more fats, NOT trans)
- Excessive stress
- Limited exercise
- Irregular sleep
These things compound, creating damage all throughout the brain.
This is why porn consumption is so bad.

It’s known to ruin the Prefrontal Cortex by attributing to many of the above listed.
The link below explains how to save your prefrontal cortex by stopping porn.

BUT ->

There are ways to combat the damage that’s done.
“I say ‘no’ to 100 things, so that I can so ‘yes’ to 1 great thing” - Steve Jobs
This is how you train your brains CEO, by practicing saying NO.
- Control your impulses - realize them, say no, move on.
This strengths the prefrontal cortex and you’ll begin to see a rippling effect in your decision making.

- Track your consumption.
Are you smoking cigs going down the road or drinking a 6 pack everyday?.....
These things are okay in moderation (let loose & have fun)

but the more your brain experiences these things, the worse it gets.

Consumption as in food too - the more carbs (bread, biscuits, crackers) the more inflamed the body becomes.
- Supplement ( @grimhood entire twitter will help)
Find vitamin B supplements.
Get sunlight for your vitamin D.
Eat oysters or take zinc pills.
Keep in mind the end goal:
A healthy, clear brain that has the ability to focus, motivate, empathize, & understand on the whim.
That grey, cloudy feeling you have may be your prefrontal cortex screaming for help.
