Why I think Joyner Lucas ruined his chance at being one of the best rappers of this generation: A Thread
Joyner jump started his career by releasing a bunch of remixes to popular trap songs where he absolutely murdered the beats with crazy flows and incredible rhymes. This made thousands of people interested in what he had to offer.
In 2015 he dropped Along Came Joyner which brought so much to the table. Storytelling, themed music, a proper introduction to him as an artist. His talents were starting to show.
In between ACJ and his next mixtape, he dropped I’m not racist which not only went viral but also gave him yet another boost in his music career.
Then came 508-507-2209 in 2017. This project was another theme based work of music. Showing the lows and highs of his current life with phone messages tying the music together. He demonstrated with these two projects that he could create something coherent and make it work.
At this point he had a pretty big surrounding of ears. He was working with bigger artists. Many people including myself were interested in hearing what else he had to offer. He dropped the lead single for his debut studio album, ADHD, in 2018. The track was titled I Love.
This song was pretty good, and as I’m sure many other fans of his music felt the same, I was getting excited for the future of Joyner Lucas. The high energy track was a perfect tease and it was really exciting.
Leading up to the unknown release date of the album, we heard him tease more music with Eminem as well as more upcoming singles. He started dropping the entire album one song by another. This was sort of infuriating especially since he had been teasing ADHD for so long.
People that were really looking forward to it started to lose interest in what the album was going to bring. The singles he was dropping after I Love weren’t anything too special and the album still had no release date.
March 25th, 2020 we finally got the album that was along awaited. There was a huge problem though. The full release on had a few new songs that weren’t already released, and they weren’t that great.
Joyner Lucas built up his name for a few years using various methods to gain popularity, but when it came time to drop his first debut album he let down everybody by dropping what in my opinion is a mid album as his debut after a long run of great rapping beforehand.
I believe he has the potential the make up for it and even drop a really good album to help better his case, but I also believe that due to the fact his breakout album wasn’t that great he’s lowered his chances at making it big and being considered a GOAT.
