Long thread head: Proud of my cousin/little sister/om el banat @NardineSaad for her brave, levelheaded @latimes piece on the recent sexual harassment scandals that has rocked the Coptic Orthodox Church.
It must be pointed out that the church stayed silent over the recent women movement in Egypt, refusing to take a firm stance against sexual harassment at a time when even Al Azhar, not exactly the beacon of liberalism, has outrightly condemned it.
Instead, priests across the country continue to scold women for their dress codes, continuously denying women their agency and incessantly implying that they only got themselves to blame when harassment occurs.
It's the same regressive, backward-looking discourse male chauvinist extremists in all religions have been adopting, and if a serious change is indeed to occur in the church, its fundamental treatment of women must be examined.
And once again, this is not a political issue...it's a purely ethical one. https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-07-28/coptic-church-sexual-abuse-metoo?fbclid=IwAR3o23JWw_7HQblI2VjH9HoVVxlOThAfZ4huqaYxKDT4LLm_fjmt4bANap8
