Coronavirus in Stone: young pub-goers, private party, few contact tracing details.

A thread about what we’ve learnt over the last 24h in the outbreak linked to drinkers from the Crown & Anchor pub.

Feel free to jump in and ask questions.

@BBCRadioStoke @bbcmtd
Public Health are looking at between 16-18th July for the outbreak in the Crown & Anchor.

But say there’s also a private event where one of the now confirmed cases from the pub held a party the following week.
They (Public Health @StaffordshireCC) said rumours started on Facebook last week but only yesterday did they start to get names and lab results through.

They held an incident meeting last night, then put this appeal out for drinkers from the C&A to get tested.
This is where you’d think track and trace would kick in. More on that in a mo.

First, there was a video doing the rounds on facebook of a packed out beer garden, think World Cup scenes. It’s believed this video was taken on the 18th July at the C&A.
The man who posted the video told @BBCRadioStoke he thinks it was really irresponsible and wasn’t surprised when he heard there was an outbreak.

He says it was like any normal day.

@BillCashMP called it appalling and says premises and individuals need to take responsibility.
Back to track and trace.

Dr Richard Harling, Director of Public Health @StaffordshireCC said he doesn’t think there is a comprehensive list of names and numbers.

He’s said that makes it difficult and that it’s like having to put together a jigsaw.
Bearing in mind the man behind the video said he thought (numbers unconfirmed) there were 100-200 people in the beer garden on one night.

That’s a lot of jigsaw pieces.

Especially as they’re looking at three nights and a private party.
I should say at this point we have tried to get in contact with the owners of the pub.

They’d already closed on the 24th posting this online and on the door of the pub:
Now back to what’s being done to try and contain the outbreak in Stone.

It’s called an outbreak when there are two or more cases linked to the same setting during 14-day period with a common exposure/link.

In this case we were told there had been 10 confirmed cases.
A temporary coronavirus testing site was set up on the Crown Street car park.

Big queues from opening at 10am.

Now we’re told more than 300 people were tested in the first two hours.
The testing site has now changed to appointment only and is now going to be open until Sunday.

Details here ⏬
It’s also had an impact on the rest of Stone.

The Swan Inn says it won’t be opening this week.

There are NO confirmed cases, but say it’s a pragmatic decision.

The Stone Farmers’ Market this Saturday has also been cancelled.
Tomorrow morning on @BBCRadioStoke we’ll be hearing from someone who was at the Crown & Anchor on the weekend in question.

Forgot to say we are talking largely about young’uns here, people aged 18-21.

Although there were families and older people in the queue to get tested this morning.
What was done about the packed out pub in Stone on the 16-18th July I hear you ask?

@StaffsPolice say they did get reports of concerns around social distancing at the C&A on Sat 18th night and Sun 19th July.

They say police attended and gave advice to the duty manager.
Dr Richard Harling, Director of Public Health @StaffordshireCC says they do have new powers to close places down but are reluctant to use those unless they really have to. So someone repeatedly breaking the rules.
So to bring us back to what we know now.

10 confirmed coronavirus cases, linked back to Crown & Anchor in Stone.

Mobile testing now happening in Stone until Sunday after hundreds got tested today.

Get yourself tested if you think you need to.
