The results are in. We now have data from three randomized trials (gold standard in medical research) showing that #hydroxychloroquine does not help—and might even be harmful—when taken to prevent or treat this #COVID19. The RECOVERY trial->good evidence from 4000+ people. It found #hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help ppl w/ severe #COVID. In fact, patients who got #HCQ tended to need more time in the hospital & they were more likely to need a ventilator or to die (2/x) https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.15.20151852v1
A second RCT in Brazil included hospitalized patients w mild or moderate #COVID in 55 sites. Researchers found that #hydroxychloroquine offered no help to those patients. The paper was published in the @NEJM on July 23, 2020. (3/x) https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2019014
A third RCT in the U.S. & Canada showed that #hydroxychloroquine didn’t protect people who were exposed to another person with COVID (e.g., at home or at work). The paper was published in @NEJM on June 3, 2020. (4/x) https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2016638
Also note that as of June 15th, the U.S. FDA does not allow doctors to prescribe #hydroxychloroquine for #COVID outside of the research context. The @US_FDA also issued a statement on July 1st warning that treating #COVID19 with #hydroxychloroquine has been linked to serious heart rhythm problems and other safety issues (kidney injuries, liver failure). To say it simply, these are good studies that have me pretty convinced that #hydroxychloroquine doesn’t work to prevent or treat severe COVID. More studies are underway. My @covid101 summary is here
